First Pair Of Socks

Socks on feet!

So, here we are, second sock completed.

In a wonderful piece of timing, the weather clouded over and got chilly just as I finished taking these photographs, so while I then got cold hands and nose, I did not get cold feetses because they were all happy in snuggly hand-knit socks.

I have to acknowledge that I didn't do these all by myself. There was much help deciphering instructions from internet people like Carie and also, Jiva did a row or two (can't remember) on sock #1 the night we went to the Cider Shed. But, I still have a great sense of personal achievement.

That is good, because really, I needed something to boost me today. Pip still hasn't got his car sorted, so I haven't seen him in quite a while, and phone conversations tend to get interrupted by the Littlun.

I have seen my mother, but she's rather preoccupied with my sister at the moment, who quit her job at the beginning of the week. I spent half an hour by the clock this morning hearing about how wonderful she is and how proud mum is of her. I don't dispute that my sister was capable of doing her job properly (working in a shoe shop) or that this is a good thing. I just don't think it's the best thing since the feeding of the five thousand, I feel that shoe-shop skills are a bit useless once you've quit your shoe-shop-job, and there's a limit to how much cheerleading about a Person Not Present I can listen to before I want to stab DPNs through my ears. Thirty minutes in one go was a bit much.

Okay, so there was a little teensy-weensy bit of me (only, like 85% or something) thinking "hey! Where's the parental pride in MY skills?" but it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that I didn't actually have the guts to come out and say that.

And anyway, I have Socks.

Congrats on the socks. They look toasty! When will you be ready to apprentice yourself to Dominocat? :)

Hang on... proud of *quitting* a job?

Proud that she got sick of this one faster than the last one? Clearly no favouritism there then!

Thanks! They are lovely. It will be a wrench taking them off tonight. But as for the apprenticeship, Dominocat is in another league. Did you see the tattoo?

It isn't the fact that Sister Dearest quit the job that mum is proud of her for. It's more that she did the job well for the probationary period, developed a working knowledge of what she was doing, what sort of stock they had, that sort of thing, and eventually got offered the regular position. Because that's like a feat no mere mortal could hope to achieve.

Socks are fabulous - so what's next said the not very suruptitious enabler!!

Regardless of your family WE are proud of you for your sock knitting. It is an accomplishment not to be sneezed at.

Next up is... well, I'm still working on that jumper for the Littlun, I've completed the back and am most of the way through the ribbing bit for the front. Once I'm past the ribbing I speed up no end because I don't have to keep counting to five/three, so I can just GO while watching TV or chatting.

But, I need to pick some nice warm durable DK yarn and slightly bigger DPNs to make some mitts for my stepdad for when he's playing guitar outside in the cold weather. He can't just use fingerless gloves because the bits between the fingers affect his playing, so imagine more like mittens with the fingers cut off.

He has one pair, but they're ugly. Red, brown and beige stripes.

well mitts are easier than socks. I'm proving that. I'm mighty impressed by your work and I only did one row of your sock

There is one good thing about your sister being "all perfect" in your parents eyes, the higher they get, the harder they fall. You can bet one day they will see sense and if they don't more fool them.
